Jim’s Training Session #2, Brantingham

A much brighter and sunny day although colder and windier, it brought 38 riders out to the second of the training sessions, a different mix of strengths today.

I’m slowly getting to know who you are so you’ll have to forgive the errors in recognition. In group One were Mark Walker, Matthew Johnson, Paul Shepherd, Will Thomas, Gary Knowles, Nick Rogers and George Leighton. Andy Faichney made a late appearance in this group also, and it was, to me, Paul Shepherd who shows some early season form.

In group two were Dean Fulstow, Mark Dicconson, Barry Warren, Paul Kilvington, Rob Hill, Jamie Adams, Mike Bradley, Paul Hickman and Matthew Enticknap from Malton, and Billy Robinson who joined later. Charlie Carruthers and Luke Stannard also tried to join this group but left it too late to attempt the effort to get on the back of the group and finished in no-man’s land.

Group three comprised Paul Cairns, Dave Millson, Mike Kilgour, Nigel Sisson and Andy Smith which, being a small group, they all got a good work-out.

Group four, also a group of ideal size, were composed of Andy Carroll, Brad Palmer, Dave Walker, Derek Palmer, Paul Noble, Shaun Nicholson and Victoria Hood. Victoria tells me she was better suited to this group than in the first week.

Last to set off in group five were, I believe, Dave Hudson,  Mike Dale, Paddy Nolan, James Murphy, David Capes and Andrew Threlfall. This, unfortunately, was a group of widely varying abilities and I imagine Dave had a job keeping it together as it seemed to disintegrate after three laps but reformed later on.

The first two groups were a little bigger than is best; six riders together share the workload fairly well together, and I’d say go up to eight maximum. After that it gets to one or two riders who get the lion’s share of the work whilst most others just sit in and get an easy ride. As there’s no real finish there’s no point in saving yourself for a sprint and if you don’t do the work you don’t get the rewards; in fact you’re only cheating yourself.

Someone has left a helmet, shades and gloves. You can either get in touch with me by phone 01482 857774 or e-mail jim@jsampson.karoo.co.uk, or I’ll bring them out again next Saturday.

Thanks once more to those who came to help: Jason Young, John Weaden, Terry Jackson, Rob Stones, Les Barratt, Gary Fulstow and Pete Kitchen on the corners and Sheila helping Richard and me. Hope to see you all again next week.
