Jim’s Training Session #6

Saturday, 8 February 2014 was another windy day, but dry and a little warmer.

I thought it was a harder day than last week but this was contradicted by some of the riders but this may have been because there were greater numbers in the groups and they stayed together much better, consequently there was less work to do. Nevertheless there was a lot of work done; the first week I’ve seen riders finish lathered in sweat. Thirty started this week.

Eight riders started in group one, namely Nick Rogers, Pete Fielding-Smith, Lee Watson, Paul Shepherd, Andy Faichney, Jason Young, Mark Walker and John Brearley. By half way the group was reduced to four, Pete, Paul, Mark and Andy, but they went around very efficiently (Andy obviously getting a bit fitter, and they finished very fast.

Group two was another eight riders, Will Thomas, Mike Bradley, Brendan Atkinson, Steve Macklin, Jamie Adams, Nigel Sisson, Neil Dean and Glenn Harrison. They roughly stayed together incrementing from group one and losing some to group three, but making a well-balanced unit.

We were unable to keep the numbers down at the start in group three, obviously the thought for the day was safety in numbers, with ten riders to share the wind. They were George Leighton, Charlie Carruthers, Matthew Johnson, Andrew Miller, Stewart Fraser, Dave Hudson, Paddy Nolan, Victoria Hood, Mark Symonds and Brad Palmer.

Only four riders were left for group four, Richard Dean, James Quigley, Callum Keenan and Paul Wray. Although Callum dropped out after a couple of laps, a real featherweight he was to be struggling in the wind, they were joined by Paddy Nolan from group one and stayed together for the rest of the session. Thanks, Richard for keeping them together.

Times are fairly consistent in the groups and there was a bit more enthusiasm to make a real effort on the last lap. Maybe we could have done another lap. We’ve got two more of these training days left so make the most of them.

We may need a bit more help next week as I know two of my regulars, Mandy and Neil, won’t be able to come next week. We were, however, well supported again with marshals; Neil Prendergast, Mick Adams and Nick Fairfield at the Sproatley junction, John Weaden at the turn from the Aldbrough road, and Mandy Dean and Jill Bradley at the Burton Constable junction, with Sheila, helping Richard and me.
