The front 3 groups managed to hold off group 4 and 5 until approaching the bell. Going out on the last lap, a break of 4 riders Ben Ives, Chris Daddy (SquadraRT) , Steve Guymer (Active CP) and Dave Shackleton (Wilson Wheels) opened a gap which they would increase to 45 seconds by the line.

In the sprint for the victory Ives managed to hold off Shackleton by half a wheel with Daddy 3rd and Guymer 4th.

They were followed home by a bunch of around 20 riders with Nathan Wilson claiming 5th and Martin Cockerill 6th and best of the early starters.

The series now moves to Walkington and round 3 with 4 riders equal on 10 points at the top – Ben Ives, round 1 winner Mark Symons and the only 2 riders to score points in both rounds Martin Cockerill and Mark Robinson.

In less than ideal conditions riders assembled at Newport Village hall on Saturday afternoon. The clouds had been looming since lunch time and a few spots of rain had been felt. Some who had entered were waiting to see what the weather did before deciding to ride. As it was being held on the V718 course people were after fast times and maybe a PB.
Times were not as quick as an event held on the same course a few weeks before, but with a winning time of 19.29 Simon Bridge (Manchester Wheelers) was still pretty fast. Andy Wilkinson (Port Sunlight Wheelers) was second, two seconds slower; apparently he rode it on a mountain bike with road tyres! The fastest woman was Rebecca Rimmington (Bio Cadenza RT) in a time of 22.58.
Neil Cleminshaw was the fastest HTRC rider with a time of 21.24, (18th overall) winning the Maurice Blenkinsop Memorial Trophy. Neil was proud to be presented the trophy by Maurice’s daughter Jan.
Other HTRC riders were Jim Trevor 22.46, Phil Tillison 23.52 and Richard Guymer 25.09.
A big thank you to all who helped, before and on the day, without their help the event would not have been possible.
Dave Millson

Held on the Sproatley circuit in awful conditions with rain from start to finish the event was marred by a crash on the finishing straight involving around 10 riders out of the front group of 40, Worse off seemed to be Cottingham CC rider Brad Palmer who looked to have a possible broken collarbone, we all wish Brad a speedy recovery.

Earlier on in the evening 5 groups set off in torrential rain with the scratch group giving 8 minutes to the first group off. First to merge where groups 1 and 2 on the 2nd lap forming a front bunch of around 20 riders. On the 3rd lap groups 4 and 5 joined forces but where still around 2 ½ minutes behind the leaders. Entering the last lap group 3 where close on the tails of the front group and would make the catch with around 5 miles to go. It was now clear that this group of around 40 riders would contest the finish as the chasing group was still 1 3/4 minutes behind.

In the charge to the line it was veteran Symons who held off teammate Andy Fainchley and Mark Robinson (Active CP) to take the victory in what we believe was his first road race.

A special mention to the 2 lady entrants Olivia Tomlinson and Nikki Moore who were both involved in the sprint for the line with Nikki taking a well deserved 10th.

with the wind behind on the climb I thought Karl Downes was in a good position, I wasn’t too sure of Dan Keena’s fitness and never too sure of the West Riding lads, particularly the lads from Sheffrec who always seem to show well. Our own hopes were on Jacob Trotter and Joe Rainey who both had been performing well lately.

The real racing started immediately hitting the back road at full speed stretching the field, enhanced further by the downpour for ten minutes on this first lap. Animators here were Gareth Owen (Team Swift) and Steve Coates (We Love Mountains) who finished the first lap in 21:10, ten seconds ahead of a dozen riders with little splits of twos and threes broken on the climb. A difficult situation here for a number of riders – if they didn’t get back before the turn on to the back road the gap would widen.

Owen and Coates stayed away for the next four laps sharing the primes. And the gap to the peloton fluctuated, 10 seconds the first lap, then 40 seconds, then 20 seconds and when it got to over a minute on the fourth lap it looked like they might stay away. However, a concerted effort brought that minute back and the prime contested on lap five by a small group was won by Jonathan Wolff (Sheffrec).

No doubt the judging would be easy at the finish, and so it proved. James Allen crested the hill and had time to look around as he freewheeled over the finishing line for a well-deserved win. Lapping was fairly consistent with times of 21:10, 21:37, 21:59, 21:54, 21:55 and 21:15.
<div

There were no riders from groups G & H, so the Es & Fs made their escape and were caught for 4 and 3 minutes by the Ds & Cs forming a large bunch. The Bs and As starting a further 2 and 3 minutes back respectively formed another bunch, but were only able to reduce that deficit 1 minute 30 seconds.

Not wanting to leave the result to a bunch sprint, Neil Dean went to the front with 800m to go and, with everyone feeling the strong cross wind, upped the pace and led to the finish.

Overall Result:

It was a busy weekend for our young riders with races at Tockwith near Wetherby on Saturday and the We Love Mountains RR at Walkington on Sunday.

Yorkshire Circuit Races – Tockwith

15 year old Alex Dalton transferred the form he has been showing in club time trials onto the road when finishing a fine 4th in the Category A Boys race. Held on a ¾ mile circuit the race was run off in horrible weather conditions with hail and rain throughout the race. The fast start meant a lead group of 7 riders would dominate the event including Alex who was always to the fore in only his 2nd outing at circuit racing. A mid race winning move by the impressive Levi Moody meant that the group would be chasing 2nd and in the sprint for the line Alex managed a fine 4th place.

Following the schoolboys was the 4th category only race which included junior Jacob Trotter. With the weather conditions improving and the circuit drying Jacob was prominent throughout and enjoyed a 7 lap break with Levi Moody who had already won the Class A schoolboys race, however this was not too last and the race came down to a bunch finish of around 20 riders. Jacob positioned himself well and finished a fine 2nd behind Moody who had special dispensation to ride in the race.

The final race of the day was the 2/3/4 category which included junior Joe Rainey. The event was dominated with a near race long break by Michael Marshall who would lap the field. Joe finished comfortably in the main bunch who sprinted for 4th place.

We Love Mountains 2/3/4 RR – Walkington

Juniors Jacob and Joe were joined by seniors Mark Walker and Paul Campbell for the WLM RR on Sunday which was 8 laps 56 miles of the Walkington / High Hunsley circuit. With a strong crosswind on the drag out of Walkington up to High Hunsley and weather conditions anything from hail to sunshine it was always going to be a tough race. The race set off at a frantic pace which split the bunch on the first climb up to Hunsley a leading group of around 10 riders which included Trotter were soon joined by another 25 riders including Walker, however both Rainey and Campbell were unable to follow the pace of the front group. Over the next 3 laps there was a gradual wearing down of the leading group until with 3 laps to go around 25 riders were left at the front. On lap 6 eventual winner Peter Cocker and Zack Whitehead broke clear of the bunch causing a further split in the front group, Trotter managed to go with the chasing group of 13 riders but Walker was unable to follow, next time up to Hunsley local riders Ben Ives, Nathan Wilson and Karl Downes along with Roy Sumner formed a 4 man chasing group behind the 2 leaders but unfortunately despite been with this move Trotter was unable to hold on and dropped back to a group of 9 riders. The 2 leaders held off the 4 chasers and Peter Cocker took an impressive victory, Wilson took the sprint for 3rd place from the 4 chasers with Trotter finishing a creditable 13th in his first outing at this level.

All focus now turns to our club road race on Sunday at Newbald.
