Event 8, Little Weighton Circuit Final Event  5th August 2010

After eight events Adam Duggleby proved to be the best in a hard fought series in this year’s road race league. Adam had only to ride the last event to keep an eye on young Steve Guymer in order to maintain his lead, and it was back on the Little Weighton circuit for the final event.

Weatherwise it was another decent night for racing; a slight head wind from the village of Little Weighton up to the finish, but not enough to cause problems, just right to keep the groups together. These were:

Group One:  Rob Stones, Ryan Wakefield, Michael Longhorn, Paul Drop, Phil Shaw, Glen Harrison, Richard Guymer, Victoria Hood, Nicky Moore, Dave Betts, and Paul Clarke.

Group Two:  Steven Waterall, Peter Cox, Jon Clarke, Gary Trees, Gary Knowles, Derek Palmer, Chris Holland, Martin Oliver, Neil Dean, Graham Lonsdale, Richard Cutsforth, Cameron Brooks, Andrew Carroll, and Nathan Chester.

Group Three: David Atkin, Tony Goundry, Benjamin Bell, Mark Walker, Mark Robinson, John Hopper, Paul Waddington, Adam Oliver, Garry Fulstow, and Chris Burton.

Group Four: David Brearley, Rob Busby, Stephen Swales, Peter Fielding-Smith, John Askew, Steve Johnson, Dean Fulstow, Jason Young and John Ketley.

Group Five:  Adam Duggleby, Steven Guymer, Matthew Fenton, David Shackleton, Nathan Wilson, Chris Daddy, Richard Moore and Jack Cutsforth.

The groups worked out ok but I felt a bit sorry for Tony Goundry who I moved back to group three. If he’d have stayed in group two and won then he would have finished third overall. It did look, with one lap to go, as if everyone would be together for the final sprint. I believe that several in the back groups thought they’d caught everyone – unfortunately not – and they slowed down for the finish. Groups one and two merged after two laps, and three, four and five merged after three laps. Only three riders escaped from the back group on the last lap and you can see this from the lap times.

A good reception was held for the prize-giving in the Black Horse at Little Weighton. Adam Duggleby was acclaimed as the best rider and won the overall trophy as well as a handsome cheque. I was asked several times if I could set him off in a group of his own after the rest of the field – so you all know who you’ve got to beat next year. Mrs Baskerville presented a trophy to Steven Guymer in memory of her son Paul who was killed in an event some years ago, and Shirley Sutton presented a trophy to Richard Moore as the best veteran, this to remember Vic Sutton who died in an earlier event which was part of the road race league. Mark Robinson also presented a small prize to Marloe Rodman for being the most elegant rider.

The racing has been really excellent and I’ve had my job cut out to work out everybody’s position, particularly this last event when my camera wouldn’t function pointing straight into a sun that shone on the horizon just as the riders crossed the finish line. Thanks to a number of people who’ve helped over the series, John Fenton, Pete Dunn, Julie Rodman, Malcolm Daddy and Sheila in particular. Thanks to all the drivers and marshals too, in particular to Paul Brearley who’s been at every one. Most of all we should thank Mark Robinson and John Galbraith for running the event.
