Three in a Row for Shack

The fifth event in the Eats Riding Road Race League took place on a course around Burton Fleming and organised by Bridlington CC; and very well organised too with cakes and tea at the finish

Only three riders started in group one and on this nearly ten mile circuit we were able to give them a six minute allowance. They were Phil Bixby, Adrian Marsh and Victoria Hood.

Group two was again the largest of the groups and comprised Lee Coulson, Rob Stones, Chris Hutchinson,

Simon Pickering, Neil Dean, Peter Cox, Tom England, Nicholas Fairfield, Paul Campbell, Graham Lonsdale, Andrew Carroll, Sam Hoad, Tom MacDonald, Craig Medcalf, Richard Cutsforth, Sebastian Pickard, Steve Coates, Paul Drop, Stuart Fletcher, Andy Naylor and Ian Lord.

Group Three was Steve Johnson, Mark Robinson, Paul Rymer, Paul Waddington, Rob Brown, Tony Goundry, Theo Brumhead, Gary Trees, Martin Cockerill, Garry Fulstow, Mark Mckeown, Stewart Pickard, Dean Fulstow and Steve Macklin.

A diminished group four fielded Stephen Swales, Jason Young, Lewis Jackson, Mel Blackford, and Rob Busby.

Finally the scratch group, starting under a very angry looking sky and more than eleven minutes behind the leaders, were David Shackleton, Chris Daddy, Nathan Wilson, Matthew Fenton, Karl Downs and Nick Coupland.

The climb up toward Hunmanby was ridden in torrential rain making conditions quite hazardous and visibility very much reduced; either seeing through rain-lashed shades or risking the grit thrown up in your eyes. Group two were split in half at the Hunmanby crossroads and only 12 of the original 21 arrived together at the end of the first lap, the rest were picked up by group three.

Phil Bixby and Adrian Marsh worked well together and they were able to contest the finish with everyone else. Once again the scratch group proved dominant and especially Dave Shackleton who recorded his third victory in a row (he’s not paying me anything I promise). Tonight’s feat was especially outstanding as I believe he had a front wheel puncture and managed to get it changed and was still able to attack the field in the finishing straight with only Karl Downes able to hold him. Maybe we should set him off after everyone else; I can remember Bill Holmes having to start on his own in some local handicap road races some fifty years ago.

There was a crash, I’m told, on the last corner and one rider, maybe a VC Beverley lad, came down heavily and may have broken his collar bone. It was certainly a dramatic night. I know that daylight is shortening now we’re over the summer solstice but I didn’t expect it to be so soon. The few pictures I took tell a sorry story.

Anyway, congratulations to Dave Shackleton who now has a handsome lead in the points table, although Chris Daddy isn’t far behind. Here’s an update
