Group Four @ 7:00

Steve Ward, Adam Duggleby, Mark Wordsworth, Steve Guymer, Alastair Kay and Dave Shackleton

Expecting the first group to go round in about 20 minutes, they surprised us returning in just over 18; not bad for a novice group. They were stretch out in a single line past the finish led by Rob Brown and Craig Medcalf – the helicopter shot would have shown them pushing the pace along.

Group two, however, did take 23 seconds out of them, not a gret amount but you expect them front groups to slow down a bit. Charlie Goodway led John Galway and Adam Hardy. Obri rider Ian Chapman slewed to a halt with his handlebars looking a bit wobbly and when he undid the tape he found a crack along the length of the carbon tubing; they were held together by the tape and the brake cable.

Group three pulled back 23 seconds led  by James Wagstaff and Matthew Fenton, and they took another four seconds out of the scratch group who were working well in echelon together, with Dave Shackleton and Steve Guymer at the front.

Lap two was a prime taken by Gareth Taylor from Rob Powell and all but Terry Parker were still together and only slightly slower than the first lap. Group two were still strung out, still nearly 4 minutes in debt, led by Charlie Goodway, Martin Cockerill and John Galway. Twenty two seconds later were group three led by Nathan Wilson, James Wagstaff and Dave Compston. The scratch group were still working well and getting nearer, Mark Wordsworth, Ali Kay and Adam Duggleby sharing the load, but they still had a lot of work to do, trailing some 52 seconds.

Group one are still lapping at less than 19 minutes and the third lap prime was taken easily by Andrew Noble from Gareth Taylor and Colin Baldwin, still a good dozen in this group. Group two and three had joined up but still some three minutes away, they were pulled along by Philip Graves, Charlie Goodway and Nathan Wilson, some 16 strong. Just over half a minute were the half dozen in the scratch group, Ali Kay, Mark Wordsworth and Adam Duggleby et al closing in for the kill, I guess they weren’t aware that the front group were still some three minutes up the road.

So, an easy win for Rob Busby of City RC, from Paul Hickman, Rob Brown and the rest of group one. The remaining groups had joined together and it was Steve Ward who led them in for 15th place nearly 2½ minutes adrift.

Were the back groups short of power? Were they not trying hard enough? Or was the front group better organised and given too much handicap? We’ll have to seen at the next event which is on the Walkington course.
