Bartley Cup – Little Weighton – 23rd May 2006
Another good entry with 28 riders starting (4 DNS) and 27 riders finishing – Mike Kilgour was the unlucky rider to puncture on the second lap and had to abondon
Thankfully the atrocious weather of the last week eased on Tuesday to leave a cold and windy night but at least the rain held off. The wind was blowing from the south west meaning the only place it was of any help was on the leg from Ripplingham crossroads to little Weighton that is mainly downhill and where no assistance is required. This made for a very hard night with cross or head wind most of the way round not to mention the almost endless drag from Little Weighton to the top of the course.
Not that the weather or drags seemed to slow Chris Whitelam down who cruised to yet another relatively untroubled victory. His ride averages out at about nealry 26 mph! and his winning margin was 31 seconds over Andy Barnes with Steve Macklin a further 45 seconds in arrears in third spot.
Dean Fulstow took 4th spot with nearly a minute to spare Paul Purdy took 5th spot but the chasing pack is closing in behind him and the racing was very close with less than 3 minutes covering 5th to 13th places.
The 3 juvenile riders could not agree amongst themselves to race over two laps and so positions were decided over their times at the end of the first lap. The finishing order was Vince by 4 seconds from Matty and Calum a further 35 seconds adrift. Vince and Matty both continued to complete 2 laps and recorded very good times of 31. 50 and 32.11 respectively.
Newcomer Kim Blackburn also posted an excellent time of 17.16 that was better than many of the men’s times for their first lap. Partner Dave Jacketts also posted a very good time for his first event in many years and with a bit more training and practice could easily move into the top 10 .Dave Milson showed a marked improvement and is getting close to the big group of riders racing for the second half of the top ten places
Next event is in 2 weeks time at Sproatley – remember to be there for 6.45pm please
2 weeks after that its the Hardriders 2 up 24 so please let me know who your partner will be at the next event
