Dalton 4th / Trotter 2nd at Tockwith
It was a busy weekend for our young riders with races at Tockwith near Wetherby on Saturday and the We Love Mountains RR at Walkington on Sunday.
Yorkshire Circuit Races – Tockwith
15 year old Alex Dalton transferred the form he has been showing in club time trials onto the road when finishing a fine 4th in the Category A Boys race. Held on a ¾ mile circuit the race was run off in horrible weather conditions with hail and rain throughout the race. The fast start meant a lead group of 7 riders would dominate the event including Alex who was always to the fore in only his 2nd outing at circuit racing. A mid race winning move by the impressive Levi Moody meant that the group would be chasing 2nd and in the sprint for the line Alex managed a fine 4th place.
Following the schoolboys was the 4th category only race which included junior Jacob Trotter. With the weather conditions improving and the circuit drying Jacob was prominent throughout and enjoyed a 7 lap break with Levi Moody who had already won the Class A schoolboys race, however this was not too last and the race came down to a bunch finish of around 20 riders. Jacob positioned himself well and finished a fine 2nd behind Moody who had special dispensation to ride in the race.
The final race of the day was the 2/3/4 category which included junior Joe Rainey. The event was dominated with a near race long break by Michael Marshall who would lap the field. Joe finished comfortably in the main bunch who sprinted for 4th place.
We Love Mountains 2/3/4 RR – Walkington
Juniors Jacob and Joe were joined by seniors Mark Walker and Paul Campbell for the WLM RR on Sunday which was 8 laps 56 miles of the Walkington / High Hunsley circuit. With a strong crosswind on the drag out of Walkington up to High Hunsley and weather conditions anything from hail to sunshine it was always going to be a tough race. The race set off at a frantic pace which split the bunch on the first climb up to Hunsley a leading group of around 10 riders which included Trotter were soon joined by another 25 riders including Walker, however both Rainey and Campbell were unable to follow the pace of the front group. Over the next 3 laps there was a gradual wearing down of the leading group until with 3 laps to go around 25 riders were left at the front. On lap 6 eventual winner Peter Cocker and Zack Whitehead broke clear of the bunch causing a further split in the front group, Trotter managed to go with the chasing group of 13 riders but Walker was unable to follow, next time up to Hunsley local riders Ben Ives, Nathan Wilson and Karl Downes along with Roy Sumner formed a 4 man chasing group behind the 2 leaders but unfortunately despite being with this move Trotter was unable to hold on and dropped back to a group of 9 riders. The 2 leaders held off the 4 chasers and Peter Cocker took an impressive victory, Wilson took the sprint for 3rd place from the 4 chasers with Trotter finishing a creditable 13th in his first outing at this level.
All focus now turns to our club road race on Sunday at Newbald.
