Two firsts in Jack McGlone Hillclimb
I am sure someone with a better memory than me will correct me if this is wrong, but two firsts were created (literally) on Tuesday night at the Jack McGlone Hill climb at Spout Hill, Brantingham.
The event was won for the first time by not one, but two, juvenile riders (under 16 years old) and hence it was also the first time the event has finished in a tied result.
Alex Dalton and Joe Dean, who have both been putting in some very good times all year in the club TT series, used their lightweight builds and excellent fitness to their advantage to beat all the senior competion and claim the spoils.
Third place was also tied with Paul Drop having his best result of the series finishing on the same time as private entry Pete Fielding-Smith
Although it is usual to time hill climbs to 1/10 I didn’t have the club’s electronic timer and decided to record to the whole second instead. In some ways I’m pleased as I dont really think it would have been fair for one of the pair to have missed out on the victory by a fraction of a second when the button is manually operated and so the fairest outcome prevailed.
For those who don’t know the event is held in memory of one of the clubs former members, Jack McGlone, who was along standing club official for many years and who I also believe organised the open Hill climb for many years and had a trophy donated in his memory after his death in the 1980s. I have managed to find the above picture (taken in the 1960s) of Jack racing when he was probably 60+ years old, but again some of our wiser may correct me on this too. The second photograph below is of Jack with Britich cycling legend Beryl Burton and her daughter Denise at the club’s Diamond Jubilee dinner in 1968 – a bit of nostalgia that demonstrates the clubs exceptional history
Dont forget the is a re-arranged event next tuesday (the last evening event of the season at Newbald starting at 6.45 pm. marshals still required so please let me know if you can help out.
