Yorkshire Cycling Federation GHS rides
GHS (or George Herbert Stance) was a highly respected figure in cycling after the war up until his death in the mid sixties, and at one time editor of Cycling, which is now Cycling Weekly.
He was born in Pocklington and rides are organised throughout Yorkshire to commemorate him and all of these rides, at some time or other, pass through this village.
This year’s local event which takes place on Sunday, 14 April, will once again be organised by Sheila Sampson. There are three standards, a 102 miles in 8½ hours, a 74 miles in 7½ hours and a 57 miles in 6½ hours.
They all start at 9 o’clock from Cottingham Methodist Church Hall, Hallgate and the fee, up to 7 April, is £2.50, or £4.00 on the day.
E-mail Sheila for an entry form on sheila@jsampson.karoo.co.uk, or call on (01482) 857774 (mobile 07754 396347), or even write to her at 19 Forbes Ave, Hull, HU6 7AJ.
