Good placing for Thursday rider in Birdwell Wheelers Open 25
Hull Thursday’s veteran time trial specialist, Jim Trevor, ‘The Hellenic Hawk’, was in action again on Saturday 26th April, 2014, in the Birdwell Wheelers Open 25 on the O25/11 course.
Jim recorded 58:14 for the 25miles which positioned him 16th out of the 82 strong field, a good representation for the club, in blustery conditions. The event was comfortably won by Nigel Haigh of Strategic Loins with a 53:26 pushing local TT legend Joel Wainman into second place with a 53:47.
Unfortunately the event was marred by an unfortunate RTA involving a fellow cycle racer. Lawrence Burrows, a 28-year-old rider with local outfit Team Swift was involved. The exact details of what happened are being investigated, but the rider was taken to nearby Doncaster A&E where it was confirmed that he had suffered a broken collar bone. The incident took place on the A614 south of Hatfield Woodhouse. Police were quick to arrive at the scene and actively stopped traffic in order to let the event continue by marshalling racers past the scene where the involved car was being held.
The event was categorised into eight categories, A being the fastest riders with H the slowest. It was a great result for Hull Thursday to take the top position in the ‘C category’, with Jim collecting the £20 prize as well as the honours.
The organiser should be praised for introducing the categorised handicap system, which allows riders who would not normally take honours to compete with riders of a similar standard whilst still competing in the open completion.
Jim commented exclusively for HTRC website after the event that he was pleased to have recorded a short 58 in such blustery conditions. Jim added that his lack of racing started to take its toll on his aging body as he started to suffer in the time trial bike position over the 25 miles.
Jim stated “The modern TT position is quite radical and only getting to ride in this position a couple of times a month is hard on the muscles.”
