EY Road Race League #5 – Ward wins at Kilham
For most riders the Kilham event is the furthest race to get to and England football team were playing their second game of the World Cup, so it was a surprise to have an equally good turn out as all the previous events.
The Kilham course is a more compact circuit than most, undulating with a main climb.
The race started with 4 group, after a couple of laps group 2 caught group 1 up the main climb and another lap-and-a-half, group 3 caught group 2.
At the beginning of lap 5 the Scratch group could clearly see the larger main bunch ahead of them, but time was running out to catch them.
The main bunch began their sprint for the finish with Stephen Ward, former national schoolboy champion, crossing the line first.
The Scratch group had made contact at the back of the bunch, but the prized top 10 had been taken.
