Memory Lane: Tom Uney

Tom Uney was the eldest of three brothers – Tom, Bill and Don – who joined the Hull Thursday Road Club in around 1951.

The Uney brothers were near neighbours of Ron Nozedar’s and lived down Fountain Road, off Beverley Road, and east of Pearson Park in Hull.

If my memory serves me correctly they used to do family time trials in the early morning, starting at the top of Fountain Road, to Beverley and back.

Mind you, you could in those days as there was hardly any traffic!

Below is the start sheet for the 1952 Raleigh ‘100’, a race the late Bob Slater won, setting a new club event record and course record with a ride of 4hrs 26mins and 44sec. Tom Uney was off at number 2.

Bob also that year set up a new club best ever record in the Central & District ‘100’ with a 4:14:30.

The picture below is a group of Thursday members around that era, with Don Uney seated on the front row, second from the right, and some older members may recognise others in the group.
