FreeWill Competition 2014

Will Thomas freewheeled to victory at last Saturday’s club Freewheel Competition, held in windy conditions along Millington Dale.

Shaun Nicolson was the only other rider who managed to make it over the small hump to continue along the valley to compete for the win near the Springs.

Mike Pickering failing to make it a brace of wins in a row was head of the following pack.

The start was delayed for 15 minutes when Josh Raven punctured in the windiest spot on the Wolds then Danny Posnett joined him about a mile later.

Once at the start place on the Huggate side of Millington Dale, tactics were discussed (some were kept close to ones’ chest) while crank arms were secured to chain stays with official cable ties.

Then it was a quick photo call, then one by one riders plummeted down the hill, testing their nerves, keeping hands off the brakes to use their momentum to get as far along the valley as possible.

Once the cable ties were cut off when each competitor had ground to a halt we regrouped at The Ramblers’ Rest in Millington where Will was allowed to wear a special medal from the café during refuelling.

Thanks to all who took part – 17 in all!
