Jim’s Winter Training Ride #2 – Report
The second training session was at Brantingham on 10th January. The wind was howling on that Saturday morning when Richard telephoned to ask if the training session was off.
Full of optimism I told him the wind would drop by the afternoon. Maybe it did, but it was a tough ride out into the wind to Brantingham for those on their bike – the icing was a good back wind return after the climb up Branny hill.
Thirty-two riders turned out for the session, 16 new ones and 16 who came back for a second session. The strangest thing is that although the wind was very much stronger, the lap times were faster. We split everyone into four groups, a minute interval between each one, for eight laps once again.
The groups stayed quite well together under the conditions, the oldest and the youngest in group four, where Rob Stones, a 69-year-old super-Vet, and Finlay Pickering, the 11-year-old schoolboy, and son of Simon, went around together and were the stalwarts of their group.
