Jim’s Winter Training #2 – Brantingham 9 January
Another damp and dismal day but that did not deter riders; I counted 68 but I think more came along bringing the total over 70.
There were nine groups set off at half minute intervals; more in some of the groups than I’d like, particularly as the first group crossed the line only a minute and a half after the last group set off. Consequently the first and last merged just after another lap. As other groups were picked up by the faster group it was difficult to keep track of the late groups.
What should you do when your group gets caught by a faster one? Should you try to hang on the back and suffer, or keep your group together and let the others pass? You may feel you can hang on the back and suffer but, unless you’re capable of mixing it with the guys who’ve caught you, that means doing your bit at the front with the others, then you should stay where you can work. This is TRAINING not racing, and if you suffer a bit before the end of the session I can guarantee you’ll do better the next week.
It was good to see so many riders out for what was a very worthwhile session; particularly a strong group of ladies (group 5) – and they certainly didn’t disgrace themselves and worked very well together.

I’ve got to thank the guys who marshalled for us on the corners.
Last week I had six helpers and was able to have two on each corner – they were Gary Fulstow and Mandy Dean, Dave Watson and Terry Jackson, and Ray Robson and Gil Foston.
We do need some more help. Only Gary, Ray and Terry were able to help this week. Ray is 88 years old and Gil has only one leg and finds it difficult to stand but they both have volunteered willingly.
Haven’t you got a dad or someone who’s interested in what you’re doing who could come along and help?
