Jim’s Winter Training #3 – Brantingham 16 January
There were about sixty riders out to do the Brantingham circuit today despite the very cold and icy conditions.
It was bright enough though; and dry enough to leave the mudguards at home. Getting there down Brantingham Dale was dicey, so slippery with packed ice, that I returned home via the main A63.
We split the riders into eight groups, but there were really too many in some of the groups. If you can all space yourselves at the start relative to your anticipated abilities we can split the groups up smaller and still keep them separated. I know some of you turn up last minute, and I don’t blame you, but we have to start dead on time so that you can get back home, apart from the lads from Malton who ride back, before it gets dark.

The pace has been pretty rapid this year, nine laps of this circuit (it’s around 2.6 miles around) was completed by the front scratch group in 50 minutes. I did have a visit from an officer of the law, fortunately a very understanding one, who had been alerted by a motorist scared by a marshal, probably having had to slow down to within the speed limit. He was very much aware that the guys who guide you around the corners are giving up their spare time to guide you through safely.
Please, please, please take notice of them when they ask you to slow down – this is training and not a time to have an accident.
We could still use some help in this department and I still have to rely on the old hands – Gary Fulstow, Ray Robson, Terry Jackson and Gil Foston. Hope it’s a bit warmer for them (and us) next Saturday.
