Event 10 of the 2024 Hull Thursday TT series went off smoothly on a warm and pleasant evening, with Hull Thursday club riders competing for the Don Westgate Trophy.
Run on the Beswick to Driffield showground roundabout and back, along the moderately undulating A164. The 10 mile showdown was taken up by only 6 riders which made for an intimate and friendly affair, with some fine performances on what is a staple of the local club TT circuits, the V7112.
The winners were Graham Heaton (CRC) for the overall, and Sam Bissell (CRC) who’s been lighting up the north’s women’s TT scene with course records and multiple category wins. Chapeau to them both.
Another highly notable performance was second placed James Barton (Beverley Velo) riding only his second TT, and only 90 seconds behind Graham riding a road bike. Clearly a lot more to come from James!
Feeling less inclined to shout about his own performance since being between 4 and 5 minutes slower (from 40 – 50 W lower average power output) over 10 miles than events competed in 2 years ago, was Mark Mckeown (writing this pretending to be Hull Thursday’s internet editor – Ian Pythian does all the work!). Accepting the correlation between dive bombed mileage and sky rocketed times over those two years, he still wishes to continue to get out when he can and see what might be pulled from the bag in what’s left of what’s turning out to be a lovely summer after all.
Special thanks to the great organising team at Hull Thursday, Geoff and Angie Rawson, Dave Millson, John Savage and others, for giving us, and you, the opportunity to get out there and race a bit.
See you out there!
Mark Mckeown
