Time Trial Series #2

06/04/2015

The second event of the Hull Thursday Road Club Time Trial series was held on Saturday, 28 March over a very flat 10 mile course at Bubwith.

This was the first solo event the series and therefore a good chance to compare fitness levels of the riders who had only previously ridden in a two-up event.

Although it was a reasonably warm day for the time of year, and the rain earlier in the day had stopped, the wind was blowing very strongly from the south-west with gusts of over 30 mph.

This made the leg to the first turn very fast with most of the second leg up to the junction with the main road not too bad either. However from this point on the other it became rock hard with the wind directly in riders faces making for a very slow and painful ride to the finish. It was also difficult to stay on the tri-bars in many places due to the gusty winds, but it was the same for everyone, and a good test of early season fitness.

The winner by a significant margin was Steve Guymer, who somehow managed to get round in 22:46 which was a fantastic time for such a difficult day, and to have achieved it must have meant he was travelling very quickly indeed on the first two legs, so as to maintain his average speed on the return leg to the finish.

In second place just over a minute adrift was Neil Cleminshaw in 23:48, who had a 16 second cushion over third placed Graham Morgan, who was on a standard road bike. In 4th place was Will Thomas in 24:09 and Andy Carroll in fifth in 25:38.

Behind the leading 5 riders was big gap to a close group of riders around the 27 minute mark with Simon Jack taking the verdict.

A big thank you to Richard Dean and George Leighton for taking care of the organisation very efficiently, and making sure everybody was signed-on and the safety signs were displayed in good time – thanks guys for a sterling job.

The next event is the first evening event of the series, and is the 5 mile prologue from Weedley masts down to Cottingham.

This can be a very fast if the wind is in the right direction and is very much a course for the strong riders.

I will send the entry list and marshalling duties list out later this week.

1. Steven Guymer 22:46
2. Neil Cleminshaw 23:48
3. Graham Morgan 24:04
4. Will Thomas 24:09
5. Andy Carroll 25:38
6. Simon Jack tbc
